THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: THE BUCKET LIST

In this article highlighting the best attractions in Panama, I have organized the activities by region to assist you in planning your itinerary. For avid hikers, I recommend spending a minimum of one week in either Boquete or El Valle de Anton. If your preference leans towards idyllic tropical beaches, consider visiting Bocas Del ToroEscudo de Veraguas, and Santa Catalina.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: BOQUETE (CHIRIQUI PROVINCE)

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: THE LOST WATERFALLS TRAIL

Embarking on one of the most awe-inspiring jungle paths worldwide, our quest led us to discover the elusive waterfalls of Boquete. We ventured through the dense, vibrant jungle, navigating slippery, muddy trails and stumbling along the way. We encountered an array of wildflowers, each more captivating than the last, until we finally reached three astonishing waterfalls that left us speechless. The Lost Waterfall Trail Hike stands out as one of the most remarkable activities to undertake in Panama.

For most visitors to Boquete, the Lost Waterfalls Trail is often their first destination. With a reasonable entrance fee of $7, it is easily accessible and offers a short yet rewarding hike that includes three magnificent waterfalls. It is a popular choice among the crowd, appealing to adventure seekers who desire the experience of witnessing a waterfall without dedicating an entire day's effort.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: THE PIPELINE TRAIL

Located just outside of Boquete Town, the Bajo Mono region offers yet another fantastic hiking opportunity known as the Pipeline Trail. This trail guides you alongside a river, meandering through the lush jungle until you reach a magnificent, gradually descending cascade at its conclusion. Along the way, you'll encounter a thousand-year-old tree and have the chance to observe unique wildlife. Completing the trail typically takes approximately two hours, making it an ideal activity for a morning or afternoon excursion during your stay in Boquete town.

The Pipeline Trail presents a delightful and relatively short stroll through the jungle, providing an excellent opportunity to spot the elusive Quetzal bird. It is said to be one of the prime attractions in Boquete for Quetzal spotting. During our hike, we also had the pleasure of sighting a snake, caterpillars, and an abundance of stunning plants that added to the trail's natural beauty.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: EL PIANISTA TRAIL

The El Pianista Trail quickly became my preferred jungle adventure in Boquete, thanks to its narrow and canyon-like path. Located just 4km outside of Boquete town, this trail offers a round trip that takes around 3 to 4 hours, featuring an elevation gain of over 2000 feet. As you embark on this trail, you'll find yourself immersed in a cloud forest, with approximately half of the journey enveloped in misty clouds. This transforms the scenery into a dripping rainforest, teeming with vibrant life, cascading water droplets from every leaf, and an abundance of wildflowers and birds.

However, it's important to note that this trail holds some intriguing mysteries. In 2014, two young Dutch women in their early twenties went missing after reaching the summit. The details of what transpired and how the investigation unfolded remain shrouded in uncertainty. It was not until a few weeks later that any trace of the girls was discovered. Their backpack was found eight weeks after their disappearance, and weeks later, bones—including a foot still inside a boot—were also uncovered. It was determined that the girls had hiked past the summit and descended into the continental divide between Costa Rica and Panama. Reports suggest that if they had encountered any trouble and sought help, it would have been the Ngobe tribe who first came into contact with them upon discovering the backpack. This adds an eerie and mysterious element to the El Pianista Trail, making it one of the most haunting experiences in Panama.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LA PIEDRA DE LINO HIKE

While it may be one of the shorter hikes in terms of distance, La Piedra De Lino will certainly put your leg muscles to the test! This trail involves a challenging ascent of 434 meters over a mere 1.3 kilometers. In other words, for every three meters you walk forward, you'll be ascending one meter. However, the breathtaking view of Boquete from the top rock makes the arduous climb well worth it.

The name "La Piedra De Lino" translates to "the rock of Lino." Lino is a small area located just about four kilometers away from the center of Boquete town. As we made our way up the trail, we encountered a variety of captivating sights, including vibrant flowers, enticing berries, and occasional glimpses of the scenic view. Interestingly, we had the entire trail to ourselves, which gave us a sense of being immersed in the jungle, despite still being able to enjoy views overlooking Boquete town.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LA PIEDRA DE ARTILLERIA HIKE

The La Artilleria hike presents a stunning trail leading to one of the most awe-inspiring viewpoints in all of Boquete. However, it is an unusual one. As we reached the pinnacle of the trail, we navigated our way up the rocks and witnessed an incredible sight: the clouds parting to reveal a breathtaking view of Boquete. It was undoubtedly the most remarkable vista we encountered during our hiking adventures in Boquete, an experience that will remain etched in my memory. In the opposite direction, we were greeted by majestic rolling mountains, characterized by multiple layers, and were even fortunate enough to witness the appearance of a rainbow. It was a day where everything seemed to align perfectly, even though this particular activity is not typically recommended by hostels as one of the must-do experiences in Boquete.

LA PIEDRA DE LA INDIA VIEJA HIKE

In my personal opinion, the La Piedra de la India Vieja hike offers the most spectacular views among all the hikes in Boquete. However, it also boasts the most challenging trail or, to be more accurate, the absence of a trail, based on my own experience. My legs bore the marks of numerous battles after completing this hike, but the breathtaking rock viewpoint at the summit made it all worthwhile and more. If you're prepared for an incredibly demanding jungle adventure, then go for it. Otherwise, I suggest enjoying the photos I took and opting for one of the other beautiful hikes available in Boquete. This is genuine advice, not a challenge. Without a doubt, this was one of the most challenging activities to undertake in Panama!

Upon reaching the summit, the view unfolded in a completely unexpected manner. A jagged rock wall gracefully curved below me, while mountains in every direction created a truly atmospheric backdrop. Despite the arduous ascent and the upcoming challenging descent, I felt as if I had conquered the peak of Boquete, completely alone in this vast wilderness.

ROCK CLIMBING WALL

En route to Bajo Mono, where the Lost Waterfall Trek and other attractions can be found, lies an extraordinary basalt rock climbing wall. What makes it truly remarkable is that it is entirely natural. In the mornings, Josh and I would come here for a run and exercise on the grass, surrounded by the stunning mountains. However, during the later part of the morning and in the afternoons, rock climbing tours would organize and guide tourists in conquering the challenges of scaling the wall.

SENDERO LOS QUETZALES

Los Senderos Quetzales, which translates to the Quetzal Trail, is a highly popular hiking route near the charming town of Boquete in Panama. While the Boquete region offers a variety of trails to explore, Los Senderos Quetzales consistently ranks among the top choices for visitors. The trail's popularity stems from its location within the Volcan Baru National Park, which provides hikers with an excellent opportunity to spot the elusive Quetzal bird.

The Quetzal holds great significance in various forms of Meso-American mythology and is revered as the national bird of Guatemala. Its distinctive appearance adds to its allure, with vibrant green feathers adorning its back, contrasting with striking red plumage on its front. The Quetzal is further distinguished by its long tail. These remarkable features make it a captivating bird that draws bird-watchers from far and wide to the Chiriqui region of Panama. El Sendero Los Quetzales stands out as one of the most sought-after activities to partake in while visiting Boquete.

HIKE TO THE SUMMIT OF VOLCAN BARU

Situated in the western part of Panama, Volcán Barú is a towering stratovolcano with an impressive elevation of 3,475 meters. It proudly holds the title of the tallest mountain in the country, affording awe-inspiring vistas of both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Embarking on a trek to the summit presents a challenging yet immensely rewarding adventure, offering panoramic views that stretch beyond the clouds. Despite being an active volcano, Volcán Barú is considered safe for visitors, providing a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the marvels of Panama's natural wonders. This overnight hike stands as one of the more demanding undertakings in the country, but the experience is truly unforgettable.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CHIRIQUI PROVINCE (OUTSIDE OF BOQUETE)

Those are the various hikes, waterfalls, and activities that filled my time in Boquete. However, during my stay, I also embarked on several day trips within the Chiriqui Province, all of which were within an hour's drive. Renting a car can be challenging, but it is possible to navigate these trips using public transportation, although it may require a bit more effort.

To assist you further, I have included detailed directions and helpful information in individual blog posts for each of the activities mentioned above and below. The following list encompasses the waterfalls, hikes, and places I visited during my time in Boquete that technically fall outside the immediate Boquete region.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: ROMELIO & KIKI WATERFALL

I find myself positioned behind a waterfall, captivated by the graceful descent of droplets before my eyes. It feels as though I am immersed within the depths of the earth, enclosed in a chamber that allows me to witness the awe-inspiring force of nature from the inside out. This breathtaking experience takes place within the heart of Kiki Waterfall, nestled in the Ngäbe-Buglé region of Chiriqui. Prior to this, I had the opportunity to visit Romelio Falls earlier in the day, accompanied by two local tour guides and a group of newfound friends.

Both of these waterfalls require some effort to reach, but if you can assemble a team, it becomes an extraordinary adventure filled with a day of chasing waterfalls. For detailed information on the guides and further insights, please refer to the comprehensive blog post linked below.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CHOCLON WATERFALL

Nestled at the conclusion of a narrow gorge, Choclon Waterfall showcases a stunning pair of cascades. This charming location serves as an ideal destination for a brief hike and a leisurely afternoon spent with friends, particularly on a sunny day. The water exhibits a captivating blue hue, while vines gracefully adorn the walls of the waterfalls, creating a truly enchanting ambiance in this picturesque spot.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CASCADA DEL TRUENO WATERFALL

When the chosen destination is Thunder Waterfall (Cascada Del Trueno), you can expect the adventure to be intense, forceful, and possibly even a bit extreme! Packed together in the bed of a pickup truck, we embarked on a winding journey through Chiriqui to Cordillera, where the short trail began. The 30-minute hike guided us down into an awe-inspiring amphitheater, where Thunder Waterfall truly lived up to its name. With unbridled fury, it unleashed a torrent of spray that lashed out within a 20-meter radius, leaving us in awe of its sheer power.

CABELLO DE ANGEL WATERFALL

The de Angel waterfall was of immense proportions! It cascaded from two distinct sides, only to merge into a singular, overwhelming force that plummeted into the pool below. The powerful rush of water created a tremendous impact, causing mist to envelop everyone in its vicinity. The rocks surrounding the waterfall proved to be extraordinarily slippery, adding an element of excitement to the experience. However, capturing photographs became quite challenging due to these slippery conditions.

CANGILONES DE GUALACA

Los Cangilones de Gualaca, located in Chiriqui, is a natural canyon slot that has withstood the test of time, boasting an age spanning thousands of years. It serves as a fantastic location to spend time with friends, engaging in activities such as cliff jumping and swimming. The term "cangilon" translates to "bucket" in Spanish, referring to a deep vessel used for collecting water. This canyon is an extraordinary representation of an elongated bucket, making it a remarkable and must-visit destination in the region of Chiriqui.

SINDIGO WATERFALL

Sindigo Waterfall in Chiriqui, Panama, is a delightful hidden gem offering exciting activities such as cliff jumping, a rope swing, and pristine blue waters. It can only be described as a paradise!

Located in the Gualaca region, the waterfall is unmarked from the main road. To reach it, we had to navigate a barbed wire fence before venturing down a narrow pathway. After a 10-minute hike along the trail, we arrived at Sindigo Waterfall.

The sight before us was nothing short of enchanting. Moss-covered boulders created a natural swimming pool, into which a charming little waterfall gently flowed. From atop the boulders, we could take exhilarating jumps from a height of approximately 4 meters. To add to the excitement, there was even a rope swing that propelled us right into the center of the pool. It truly was an epic and magical spot to experience.

JOGUATA WATERFALL

Having spent over a week exploring the town of Boquete, I had already visited numerous waterfalls, although none of them offered a substantial cliff jump. However, that all changed when I decided to explore Joguata Waterfall in Caldera. The thrill of an 8-meter leap from the edge of the waterfall into the pool below injected a surge of adrenaline into my day.

The water in the pool is sufficiently deep, and the force of the waterfall cascading into it adds to the excitement. It's best to aim slightly to the left of the waterfall when jumping, but it's crucial to assess the conditions beforehand as the hidden dangers beneath the surface can be unpredictable.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: EL VALLE DE ANTON (COCLE PROVINCE)

I chose to make El Valle de Anton, or simply 'El Valle,' my home for a month. The name El Valle translates to 'The Valley,' but this captivating area, located just a few hours away from Panama City, is much more than just a valley. It is, in fact, a volcanic crater formed many years ago. The region offers an abundance of hiking opportunities, including trails along the rim of the crater and in the surrounding areas.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE

The sunrise viewpoint we are discussing is widely renowned in Anton Valley as one of the most sought-after spots. It takes a mere 45 minutes to hike to the summit from the town, making it an ideal way to kickstart your morning with a scenic adventure. The loop trail follows the edges of the picturesque mountains within the crater, creating a formation that resembles the reclined figure of a sleeping person. This distinct feature gives the hike its name, and in our blog post, we will explore the captivating Legend of the Sleeping Indian, along with providing comprehensive details on hiking La India Dormida for an unforgettable sunrise experience.

According to local legend, Luba, also known as 'Airflower,' was the spirited youngest daughter of esteemed Chief Urraca, who led one of the many Guaymi Tribes residing in Anton Crater. Despite years of conflict between her tribe and the Spanish, Luba defied expectations by falling in love with a Spanish official living in the town. Yaravi, a courageous warrior from her tribe, cherished deep affection for Luba, but his love was not reciprocated. Overwhelmed by heartbreak, Yaravi tragically took his own life by plunging off a mountain, while Luba looked on in bewildered astonishment. Faced with the struggle of betraying her tribe or embracing forbidden love, Luba succumbed to despair, losing herself in the bushes as she cried and mourned, eventually meeting her untimely demise.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CERRO CARA IGUANA

For my initial hike in Cocle, I embarked on a brief and delightful trek that eventually led to a drenching experience as I reached the summit of Cerra Cara Iguana. Anton Valley is a remarkable location, as it is a colossal volcanic crater that surprisingly serves as a habitation. It's quite astonishing to contemplate the decision-making process that led to the establishment of a settlement within a volcanic crater.

What exists now is a captivating town surrounded by breathtaking mountains. In essence, Anton Valley unintentionally positioned itself as a future destination for adventure tourism. Cerro Cara Iguana offers a splendid vantage point to behold the crater. The ridge of Cerro Cara Iguana extends further into the heart of the crater than any other point, making it an ideal hike to undertake early during a visit to Anton Valley. It provides a wonderful perspective on the town's layout and remains one of my favorite places to explore in Panama.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CERRO GAITAL

Often regarded as one of the most challenging hikes in Panama, the Cerro Gaital trek will undoubtedly push your limits as you make your way towards the awe-inspiring viewpoint.

Ascending Cerro Gaital entails traversing through a dense forest, enveloped by an atmospheric tunnel of foliage, before encountering demanding vertical rock climbs that lead you towards the mist-covered summit. The duration of the hike typically spans under three hours, depending on the time spent at the pinnacle. You have the option to walk to the trailhead from Anton Valley Town or take a bus to the trailhead for a nominal fee of $1.

Once you reach the top of Cerro Gaital, a captivating panorama unfolds before your eyes, encompassing the entire valley and extending beyond. Seated atop the small cement hut, I savored my lunch while reveling in the tranquility of yet another uninhabited mountain in the serene El Valle de Anton.

CERRO LA GAITA

Although Cerro La Gaita is not situated directly within El Valle de Anton, it is conveniently located just a short drive or bus trip away from the town center. This proximity makes it one of the top activities to partake in either within El Valle de Anton or in its vicinity.

As you emerge from the lush jungle, each mountain in Anton Valley seems to encircle you, creating a captivating atmosphere. Upon reaching a wooden platform, you ascend for approximately an hour along a slippery path and climb stairs that cut through the dense foliage. Finally, you arrive at the summit of Cerro La Gaita, where you are greeted by a breathtaking view encompassing Cerro Picacho and San Carlos Lake, showcasing the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

POZO AZUL WATERFALL CANYON

Nestled amidst a serene farmland area lies one of Panama's hidden gems. While many places around the world are often hyped up, Pozo Azul surprisingly exceeded my expectations and turned out to be an extraordinary destination. Deep within the lush jungle, a sequence of cascading waterfalls descends from one level to the next, forming pristine azure pools. Pozo Azul in Cocle, Panama offers thrilling activities such as rock climbing, cliff jumping, and the ultimate waterhole experience, all waiting to be explored in this breathtaking location.

CERRO LA SILLA

Embarking on a brief journey, Cerro La Silla leads you to a remarkable vantage point atop the mountains, where you can witness the stunning sunrise painting the horizon, offering breathtaking views of Valle de Anton and beyond. It is intriguing that Cerro Cara Iguana and India Dormida hikes are often highly recommended, while Cerro La Silla receives less attention. However, having experienced all three hikes, I would find it challenging to rank them, but I must admit that Cerro La Silla arguably offers the most captivating vistas.

Just as the sun was on the verge of breaking over the horizon, we reached the summit and found a seat beneath the imposing cross, a common sight at viewpoints in Valle de Anton. From this elevated position, we could gaze back into the crater of Valle de Anton and also admire the impressive Cerro Picacho in the distance. The panoramic views were truly awe-inspiring.

CERRO PICACHO IN SAN CARLOS

Offering a mesmerizing vista of San Carlos Laguna, the Cerro Picacho hike in San Carlos, West Panama, boasts one of the most impressive viewpoints in the region. The trail ascends steadily through dense forests, guiding you across tangled roots, muddy paths, and beneath a captivating canopy. The tropical climate ensures the familiar experience of sweating profusely, enduring heat, and craving fresh air as you make your way to the summit.

Cerro Picacho in San Carlos features two notable viewpoints. The first is an intriguing boulder that juts out along the trail, providing an excellent vantage point to admire the lake and the neighboring peak. The other peak is remarkably steep, although I have come across a video of someone perched atop it. From the lookout at the boulder, we could glimpse other hikes such as the Cerro La Gaita platform, offering an opportunity to observe the surrounding mountains in the area. It serves as a wonderful spot to appreciate the beauty of the nearby peaks.

CERRO TUREGA HIKE

Cerro Turega offers a magnificent trail that takes you past enchanting waterfalls before embarking on a challenging ascent leading to the summit's three peaks, rewarding you with breathtaking panoramic views! The hike spans a 6km trail, but it is often estimated to be a 4-hour journey due to the incredibly steep and slippery terrain, which slows down the pace significantly.

Although there are three impressive peaks, to the best of my knowledge, only the first peak is accessible, as seen in the photos where we are standing. The second and third peaks appear to be extremely steep, and I would be surprised if they are reachable. Despite the occasional fog and stormy clouds, we were fortunate enough to catch glimpses of the beautiful views along the way.

ISLA FARALLON DAY TRIP

Isla Farallon, situated off the southern coast of Panama near Farallon, is a distinctive island that can be easily reached with just a couple of hours' drive from Panama City. We embarked on a journey comprising three buses from Valle de Anton, which took us around an hour, and we spent a delightful day basking in the sun, exploring Isla Farallon, and engaging in beach volleyball on Farallon Beach. This family-friendly beach exudes a laid-back atmosphere with its relaxed vibes, warm sunshine, and salty sea breeze.

The trip from El Valle to Farallon Beach was quite efficient, taking just a little over an hour with two buses. From there, it only requires a short fifteen-minute boat ride to reach Farallon Island. I found it helpful to include this guide as sometimes, amid daily hikes in El Valle de Anton, one might lose sight of what a beach looks like!

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA:OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN COCLE PROVINCE

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: AGUILA FALLS AND CANYON

As I made my way through knee-deep, crystal-clear blue water, I gazed up at towering walls of ferns and vines, with sunlight filtering through the canopy and illuminating the canyon. It truly felt like embarking on an Indiana Jones-style adventure.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CERRO TRINIDAD HIKE

Cerro Trinidad offers a challenging hike through dense jungle, leading to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking Capiro. It is not a widely frequented trail, resulting in a rough and sometimes extremely steep terrain. Due to its difficulty, a guide is strongly recommended, and hikers who are not in good physical condition may choose to skip this hike due to the steep incline.

CERRO CHAME SUNRISE HIKE

Cerro Chame comprises various ridges and undulating hills that offer stunning views of the Chame region. The hike takes a little over an hour to reach the cross at the summit, but you have the option to extend your journey by continuing along the ridges, turning it into a much longer hike.

LOS VALLES WATERFALL CLIFF JUMP

One of my absolute favorite spots in Panama is Los Valles Waterfall cliff jump. For me, it's pure heaven on earth, basking in the sun while lounging on the rocks between thrilling cliff jumps! This experience ranks high among the most enjoyable things to do in Panama.

The main highlight is the impressive 15-meter cliff jump, and there are other suitable spots around the watering hole for jumping as well. However, it's crucial to note that this isn't an easy place for cliff jumping. The 15-meter jump requires a confident run and a strong push to reach the middle of the pool below. Caution is essential, as attempting a small jump or backing out midway can be hazardous. This is a place that demands respect and careful consideration.

CERRO DE LA CRUZ SUNRISE HIKE

Braving the cold, we huddled behind boulders atop Cerro De La Cruz, beneath the imposing cross that loomed overhead. Rising early at 2 am, we embarked on the Cerro De La Cruz viewpoint hike in Campana National Park, eagerly anticipating a magnificent sunrise. Shivering with anticipation, we patiently waited for an hour until the sun finally pierced through, revealing the stunning beauty of the valley below and the mountains bathed in sunlight.

At 905 meters above sea level, this viewpoint became one of my favorite spots in Panama. Standing beneath the majestic cross, peering down into the breathtaking drop below, was an exhilarating way to kickstart the day!

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: SANTA FE (VERAGUAS PROVINCE)

Santa Fe, a charming town, is cradled amidst the majestic mountains of Veraguas. Situated right in the heart of Panama, Santa Fe has become a haven for adventure seekers, especially hikers and waterfall lovers. During my ten-day stay in Santa Fe, I embarked on a daily journey to explore various hikes and waterfalls. While it might not be the first destination that comes to mind for travelers planning their Panama itinerary, Santa Fe turned out to be one of my most cherished backpacking experiences in the country.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CERRO TUTE HIKE

Cerro Tute offers a vantage point where you can gaze upon the picturesque town of Santa Fe from a precarious heap of rocks! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cerro Tute, and it made for a wonderful introduction to Santa Fe, Veraguas. Despite its considerable length, I highly recommend embarking on this hiking trail as your first adventure in Santa Fe. The rewarding views of the surrounding area and the opportunity to spot other peaks to explore make it a memorable experience.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: ALTO DE PIEDRA WATERFALL HIKE

After retracing my steps all the way back to the entrance gate, I decided to explore the trail on the far left. It was the only path I hadn't yet ventured into, as I had entered from the far right and ended up on the middle trail, seemingly completing a loop. But the far left trail remained unexplored, so I embarked on it. To my surprise, this trail led to the grandest waterfall, which appeared to be the most popular one. The trail was well-maintained with tires placed to aid in traversing the muddy parts, making it easy to follow.

At the end of the trail, I was met with a magnificent sight - the largest waterfall of the day. It seemed like the waterfalls in this area were never-ending, a true testament to Panama's natural beauty. A shallow pool once again gathered the water at the base of this splendid waterfall.

BERMEJO WATERFALL HIKE

Bermejo Waterfall was a mesmerizing display of nature's power and beauty. As I perched on a damp rock, enveloped by the amphitheater-like surroundings of Bermejo, I couldn't help but imagine the countless events that shaped this enchanting place to its current state. Massive boulders, draped in moss and adorned with trees, bore witness to the passage of time. The chilling waters swirled relentlessly, almost tempting one to brave its dangers. And then there was the waterfall itself, a multi-tiered, dual-directional force of pure intensity, cutting through the heart of the Santa Fe Jungle like an exclamation mark.

This forceful waterfall lacked a safe swimming spot directly beneath it. However, the first pool offered a refreshing respite. I highly recommend bringing a packed lunch and spending a few hours in this area, appreciating the surroundings and recuperating from your journey!

EL SALTO WATERFALL HIKE

El Salto comprises a stunning array of at least 22 waterfalls nestled amidst the mountainous terrain near Santa Fe. I personally ventured on foot to explore two of them and utilized my drone to capture another. While it is feasible to explore all of them, it requires a profound understanding of the area, rope-handling expertise, and meticulous planning.

Undoubtedly, it ranks as one of the lengthier Santa Fe hiking trails, but the rewards align with the effort invested - a true remote paradise awaits those who dare to venture!

NUCA DEL TORO HIKE

In the midst of numerous captivating waterfalls and trails, Nuca Del Toro stands as a simple path that lacks a grandiose viewpoint. Nonetheless, if you give the trail a chance, it can become an enjoyable afternoon activity, offering a refreshing change of scenery from the typical Panamanian Jungle. Towering pine trees embrace you atop the hill, providing glimpses of the mountain range from various giant boulders you can climb onto.

NATURE NIGHT TRAIL

Embark on a nocturnal adventure armed with your trusty flashlight! Delving into the jungle at night, we had an incredible time exploring and encountered an array of fascinating creatures. Our journey brought us face-to-face with frogs, snakes, a shy sloth, cicadas, butterflies, tarantulas, and a myriad of peculiar bugs.

What added an intriguing twist was the abundance of motion-sensor cameras in Santa Fe. Edgar shared with us the astonishing photos captured over the past two years, revealing the presence of elusive creatures like Jaguars, Ocelots, Pumas, and other large mammals roaming the jungle, albeit rarely spotted!

We spent around 1.5 hours strolling amidst these remarkable creatures, marveling at their beauty along the way. If you're keen on this experience, I highly recommend it. Just head to Hostal La Qhia and inform them of your interest. The tour cost us $25 per person, and it was the only paid excursion I embarked on in Santa Fe; the rest of the Santa Fe hiking trails were free!

LOMA GRANDE WATERFALL HIKE

Loma Grande Waterfall, located close to Santa Fe in Veraguas, is undeniably one of the most breathtaking destinations in the area. Not only does this waterfall showcase its natural magnificence, but the surrounding amphitheater elevates its charm to a whole new level. On either side, lush slopes adorned with tropical plants glisten from the waterfall's refreshing spray. The stream leading up to the falls is adorned with moss-covered rocks, creating a mesmerizing scene. However, the true highlight lies in the unexplainable pool of striking blue water nestled beside the waterfall.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LAS GOLONDRINAS WATERFALL

I had heard tales of this massive waterfall, but I couldn't have imagined it to be as grand as it turned out to be. Las Golondrinas Waterfall is a colossal wonder located near Santa Fe, Veraguas. The hike to reach the falls is relatively short, just 20 minutes, but it guides you through a magical realm of vines and river crossings before finally unveiling the majestic waterfall.

The trail is well-marked and even features handrails at certain points. However, due to the conditions, it is quite muddy, and you're bound to get wet and dirty along the way. If the trail doesn't drench you, the river crossing certainly will.

EL SALTO DEL LIMON WATERFALL

Numerous rivulets cascaded over the cliff's edge, resembling tearful lines gently flowing from the earth. El Salto del Limon is a stunning waterfall that exudes a tranquil and serene ambiance, in contrast to the forceful displays of power seen in many other waterfalls across Panama.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LA SILAMPA WATERFALL HIKE

A rugged pathway meanders through the undulating hills of Calobre. After an arduous hour-long ascent, eager explorers can only envision the paradise that awaits at their destination. As the trail concludes, a true oasis emerges, a pristine crystal-clear oasis. A river cascades down from the mountains, forming a magnificent waterfall that pours into the azure blue water, creating several small lagoons before plunging into another waterfall and disappearing into the river below. My friends, this is a mountain paradise.

Silampa holds a special place in my heart, and it's an ideal spot for a day-long retreat with a packed lunch and great company. The trek takes only an hour each way, making it the perfect weekend adventure in Panama.

ISLA ESCUDO DE VERAGUAS CAMPING TRIP

Escudo de Veraguas, often referred to as the ultimate hidden gem or the final undiscovered paradise of Panama, is truly a remarkable destination in Central America. Its name, meaning 'The Shield of Veraguas,' captures the essence of this tropical island oasis. Here, you can find the elusive three-toed pygmy sloth, occasionally seen gracefully swimming in the pristine waters of the mangroves. Visiting Escudo de Veraguas is an absolute must for anyone exploring Panama!

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: SANTA CATALINA

Santa Catalina is Panama's ultimate coastal haven, renowned for its stunning beaches and top-notch surf spots. While somewhat undiscovered, the area boasts delightful resorts and lively hostels, providing the perfect setting to unwind and immerse yourself in the laid-back, coastal atmosphere.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: SURF AT LA PUNTA

La Punta has gained recognition as one of Central America's finest waves due to its unparalleled offshore conditions and remarkable consistency, a rarity in this region. From April to October, it consistently offers excellent right-breaking waves. During high tide, surfers usually paddle out from Hotel Santa Catalina or other nearby entry points, taking advantage of the favorable tides that extend quite a distance. The outer section is the favored spot at La Punta surf break, dispersing down the long point, particularly during high tide. However, it's essential to be mindful of the strengthening offshore winds in the afternoon.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: LEARN TO SURF AT PLAYA ESTERO

If the La Punta break seems too intense or advanced for you, no worries in Santa Catalina. On the opposite end of the village, down the hill, lies Playa Estero. This expansive beach boasts gentler, rolling waves that are perfect for beginners of all ages. Throughout the day, you can witness kids and first-timers catching their first-ever waves here.

For a mere $5, you can rent a surfboard directly from local surf vendors right on the beach, and they also offer lessons. If you're new to surfing, I recommend taking at least a half-hour lesson to get your footing right and learn the proper techniques. Learning to surf is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Santa Catalina.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: HANG OUT AT PLAYA SANTA CATALINA

Playa Santa Catalina is the second beach with black sand in Santa Catalina, and it serves as the lively center of the town. It is conveniently surrounded by cafes and rental stores for scuba diving, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Throughout the day, the beach is a popular spot to relax and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, yet it never becomes too crowded. In the evenings, you'll find groups of locals engaging in fun and social volleyball games on the nearby court, and tourists are also welcome to join. Down by the water, enthusiastic soccer games take place on the smooth black sand. I had an incredible sunset soccer game there, which quickly became one of my favorite activities in Santa Catalina.

TREK TO PUNTA ROCA

Punta Roca is a narrow trail that commences at the leftmost part of Playa Santa Catalina. It meanders through farm fields and follows the coastline for approximately thirty minutes until you reach Punta Roca. This area boasts numerous secluded coves, inlets, and hidden beaches. When I hiked to Punta Roca, the experience felt a bit peculiar as I had to pass through what seemed like private farms, but luckily there were gaps in the fences for hikers to pass through.

The trail wasn't always well-marked, but I eventually reached my destination. However, when I arrived, a heavy storm hit. To explore the region from above, I decided to fly my drone from Playa Santa Catalina the next day. Although not as popular as other activities in Santa Catalina, it offered a thrilling adventure!

SEE THE REFLECTIONS AT LA COQUITA

La Coquita is among my preferred beaches in Santa Catalina due to its enchanting reflections. It brings back memories of Bali's beaches, where the black sand creates mesmerizing reflections during sunset. If you're seeking a captivating display of colors during sunset, La Coquita is the place to be.

Given its vast sandy expanse, La Coquita is a popular spot for horseback riding, and we even ventured here on cruiser bikes. During our visit, we witnessed an intense storm passing by, while the horses continued their ride. It was a surreal experience that lasted about ten minutes, and surprisingly, the storm never reached us. Watching the sunset at La Coquita remains one of my favorite activities in Santa Catalina, thanks to its stunning reflections.

EXPLORE PUNTA BRAVA

If you take a stroll along Playa Estero and then continue all the way down La Coquita, you can cross over the rocks to reach Punta Brava. The walk will take approximately thirty minutes. Unlike Playa Estero or La Coquita, Punta Brava has a very rocky beach, especially noticeable during low tide. While it may not be as popular as other activities in Santa Catalina, visiting Punta Brava is a great way to conclude a walk from Playa Estero.

During high tide, Punta Brava becomes an excellent surf spot with waves that can reach well beyond 6 feet. There are both right and left waves, with the right wave offering a hollow experience, and the fast left wave comes to life when there are over 6 feet of swell.

KAYAK TO ISLA CATALINA

Santa Catalina Island, also known as Isla Catalina locally, is a stunning island located just off the coast of Santa Catalina in Veraguas. The main attractions of the island are snorkeling and its pristine white sand beach. It offers a tranquil and serene afternoon as it is rarely crowded with tourists. To reach the island, you can either rent a boat for a quick trip or embark on a kayak adventure, which is what we did. Despite the effort required to get there, I believe this is one of the finest beaches in Santa Catalina, if not the best.

The backside of the island is covered in rocks, while the front side boasts a long sandy beach. It was the perfect spot to bask in the sun and get a tan. While exploring along the shore, we kept an eye out for a trail we had heard about.

Overall, our day was incredible, and kayaking to Isla Catalina was undoubtedly one of the top highlights and best activities to do in Santa Catalina!

TAKE A DAY TRIP TO COIBA NATIONAL PARK

Coiba National Park, situated in the Gulf of Chiriqui province, can only be described as a true paradise. It is a top-rated day trip and a highly popular activity in Santa Catalina. The region boasts idyllic white sand beaches, pristine crystal-clear waters, and picturesque islands adorned with palm trees. What sets this place apart is not just the beauty above the water's surface but also the incredible marine life beneath it. Coiba National Park is a haven for various marine species, including whale sharks, humpback whales, sea turtles, and stingrays.

Encompassing 430,825 acres of tropical bliss, the park consists of 38 distinct islands, with Isla Coiba being the most renowned. Since 2005, Coiba National Park has earned UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition.

To experience Coiba National Park, visitors can choose from various options, including day trips from Santa Catalina or scuba-diving excursions. While it is possible to stay overnight on the park's premises, the accommodations at the ANAM ranger station on Isla Coiba are basic, offering two-room cabins with air conditioning.

MAKE A DAY TRIP OR STAY OVERNIGHT ON CEBACO ISLAND

Cebaco Island, located less than an hour's boat ride away from Santa Catalina, offers an exceptional opportunity for observing whales, snorkeling, and exploring various islands. This picturesque destination is adorned with palm trees, creating a true paradise, and the best part is that you'll have it all to yourself!

Cebaco Island boasts only one hotel, Cebaco Sunrise, and is home to fewer than 300 locals. During my 48-hour stay on the island, I didn't encounter any other tourists or locals. Our accommodation at Cebaco Sunrise provided complete isolation, allowing us to revel in our private paradise. I had the freedom to wander along the coast in solitude, discovering lagoons, waterfalls, and caves. It's a rare experience to have an entire island all to yourself!

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: PLACES TO VISIT NEAR PANAMA CITY

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: ANCON HILL VIEWPOINT

Ancon Hill, also known as Cerro Ancon, is the most renowned vantage point in Panama City, offering stunning vistas of the Panama Canal, the city center, and the charming Casco Viejo old town area. The ascent to Ancon Hill is a manageable 30-minute climb along a paved road, though it does have a relatively steep incline. However, the gradual nature of the climb makes it suitable for hikers of all abilities, including kids and dogs.

Upon reaching the summit, visitors can enjoy two official viewing platforms, although there is actually a third one that is unauthorized. The first platform provides a bench and a small viewing hut, offering delightful vistas of Casco Viejo old town. The second and most popular viewpoint offers ample seating space and impressive panoramas of the city center and the vast ocean beyond.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: CERRO CEDRO VIEWPOINT

Cerro Cedro is possibly the finest vantage point in Panama City. With an elevation slightly surpassing 500ft above sea level, you can relish splendid vistas of the bustling Central American business hub, Panama City. What makes this viewpoint special to me is the feeling of being in the midst of the jungle, gazing out at the metropolis through the foliage. The presence of howler monkeys' cries nearby reaffirms that you are truly in the wild, even with the urban jungle just within reach.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: PLANTATION TRAIL IN SOBERANIA NATIONAL PARK

Panama City can become quite chaotic with its traffic and urban environment. However, the wonderful thing about Panama is that you're never far from the serenity of the jungle or an exciting adventure. A mere 28km drive from Panama City will lead you to Soberania National Park. Inside the park, numerous trails await exploration, and among the most favored is the 14km Plantation Trail.

THINGS TO DO IN PANAMA: JAGUAR FALLS HIKE IN KALU YALA

Jaguar Falls is a stunning waterfall and waterhole located at the conclusion of a 5.3km trek through the lush jungle. The name "Jaguar Falls" stems from the presence of jaguars in the area, particularly at night. While the exact number is uncertain, sightings are not rare. Nevertheless, visiting Jaguar Falls during the day is perfectly safe. One of the highlights of this adventure is an exhilarating cliff jump, approximately 8m in height or even higher, for those seeking an extra thrill. This hike is, without a doubt, my preferred one near Panama City.

SAN BLAS ISLANDS

Traveling from Colombia to Panama is far from a simple journey due to the challenging Darien Gap Jungle, which makes overland transit by bus or car impossible. The most prevalent option to reach Panama from Colombia is by flying to Panama City. However, we discovered that one-way flight tickets are quite pricey, amounting to $250 USD, considering the distance of the flight.

The San Blas Islands provided an unforgettable experience. We engaged in fantastic snorkeling, island-hopping, and enjoyed thrilling beach volleyball matches. Nights were spent resting in hammocks, while days were filled with exploration of various islands, meeting indigenous tribes, and relaxing on the stunning beaches.

BOCAS DEL TORO

Bocas Del Toro is a well-visited destination in Panama, aside from the city. Who can resist the allure of tropical surroundings, turquoise waters, sloths, and picturesque beaches? It truly is a stunning location with abundant snorkeling spots, secluded islands, and charming beachfront getaways. I enjoyed a few delightful days there, but eventually, inclement weather prompted me to seek mountain adventures. Bocas Del Toro remains one of the top tourist attractions in Panama.

OVER-WATER BUNGALOWS

Luxury villas are not my main focus when traveling, but staying in a villa over the water was truly a unique and exciting experience. I had the fortunate opportunity to collaborate with Azul Paradise and indulge in their resort for a few days. While the cost is relatively high, exceeding $300 per night, compared to some Maldives resorts at $5000 per night, Bocas Del Toro offers a more affordable option for those seeking an over-water luxury retreat.

SPOT A SLOTH

Panama offers numerous opportunities to spot sloths. I encountered them on hikes near Panama City and in Campana, but Bocas Del Toro is particularly abundant with these fascinating creatures. During a river cruise on Bastimentos, our guide skillfully pointed out several sloths. While they are challenging to spot due to their slow movements, you might just be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of them.
